Removing Chromate Is Easy on Paper. Rebuilding What It Used to Do Is the Real Formulation Challenge.
Chromate-free corrosion protection has been discussed for years, but replacing hexavalent chromium is still not a simple ingredient substitution. A silane or sol-gel layer may show excellent initial barrier performance and still fail after prolonged humidity, chloride exposure, mechanical damage or application of the final organic coating.
The difficulty lies in rebuilding several functions at the same time. The treatment must bond strongly to the metal, form a dense and hydrolytically stable network, tolerate real processing conditions, support adhesion of the primer or topcoat and continue protecting the substrate when defects begin to appear.
This advanced expert-led training focuses on the formulation and processing decisions that control that performance. Rather than spending valuable time on basic corrosion theory, the expert examines how silane chemistry, hydrolysis and condensation, hybrid zirconium or titanium modification, inhibitor incorporation, surface preparation, film formation and curing interact inside a complete chromate-free protection system.
Participants will also work through the failures that make these technologies difficult to industrialize, including cracking, bath instability, poor wet adhesion, chloride penetration, inconsistent substrate response and loss of performance during extended corrosion testing.
