Removing Isocyanates Is Only the Beginning. The Adhesive Still Has to Cure, Bond and Survive.
Polyurethane adhesives and sealants are valued for their combination of adhesion, toughness, flexibility and durability. Replacing conventional isocyanate chemistry therefore involves much more than simply choosing a different reactive group.
Non-isocyanate polyurethane technologies, particularly polyhydroxyurethane systems based on cyclic carbonate-amine chemistry, are creating new formulation possibilities for adhesives and sealants. However, their reaction kinetics, viscosity development, network structure, moisture response and interfacial behaviour can differ substantially from conventional polyurethane systems.
The formulation challenge is to control these differences without sacrificing the properties that made polyurethane chemistry attractive in the first place.
This advanced expert-led training examines how cyclic carbonate structure, amine functionality, stoichiometry, catalysts, molecular architecture and hybrid chemistries influence NIPU cure and adhesive performance. Particular attention is given to practical development challenges including slow cure, working time, crosslink density, water sensitivity, adhesion development, toughness and thermal durability, together with emerging epoxy-hybrid, waterborne and bio-based approaches for improving performance.
The main idea is to help formulators evaluate where isocyanate-free polyurethane chemistry is technically viable, how formulations can be optimized, and which performance gaps still need to be solved before moving toward demanding adhesive and sealant applications.
