Styrene has never been present in unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins simply because formulators needed a low-viscosity liquid. It reduces resin viscosity, participates in crosslinking, influences network formation, supports reinforcement wet-out and helps create the processing window that has made UPR and vinyl ester systems commercially successful across composites, gelcoats, corrosion-resistant structures, castings and molded parts.
Reduce it aggressively, and several properties can begin moving at the same time. Viscosity rises. Fiber wet-out changes. Gel time moves. Peak exotherm changes. Surface cure can deteriorate. Shrinkage behaves differently. Tg, toughness and chemical resistance may no longer match the original resin.
