Replacing a Multimaterial Laminate Is Easy on a Structure Drawing. Rebuilding Its Barrier and Processing Performance Is the Difficult Part.

Flexible packaging has traditionally achieved demanding performance by combining different materials, with each layer contributing barrier, stiffness, toughness, heat resistance, printability or sealing performance. The move toward recyclable mono-material packaging changes that design logic.


A polyethylene or polypropylene structure may be much easier to place within a recycling stream, but PE and PP alone cannot automatically reproduce the oxygen barrier, aroma protection, dimensional stability, surface properties and processing latitude delivered by conventional PET, PA, aluminium and polyolefin laminates.


The technical challenge is therefore not simply to remove incompatible materials. It is to rebuild the required package performance using oriented polyolefin films, thin barrier layers, functional coatings, primers, adhesives, printing systems and sealant technologies that remain compatible with the intended recycling route.
